Is the metaphor of the golden calf accurate? ie, most people choosing poverty to have something to adore?

Good question. When I was in England, I saw people wearing nothing more than sewed together burlap bags walking around Buckingham Palace admiring and cooing at all the wealth they saw. "Oh look at the precious Prince and his beautiful mum and isn't Prince Charles just adorable in those fine clothes." I wanted to puke.
