Does Genesis chapter 1 contradict our current understanding of the universe?

Genesis is an ancient story and it just doesn't have relevance today. It was written at a time when very little was known about the universe and now that we understand more about the world we live in, it should be viewed as what it is -- a historical work of fiction.
