How can I become a computer software engineer?

I am a preschool teacher now and I'd like to move into working with computers. I understand from the Occupational Outlook Handbook that computer software engineering (applications) is a career that will increase and not decrease from outsourcing. Can you share with me the best way to go about becoming a CSE without going back to school for another BA in computer science (I have a BA in psychology and an MA in education)?
